Ex.3. Use the emphatic construction in the following sentences. Make the sentences emphatic as in the model.

Model: He came to Poltava only yesterday. It was only yesterday that he came to Poltava.

 

1. I recognized him only when he came up to me.

2. He used to read to us Jack London's stories.

3. I could not read this book because of the small type.

4. This student made a very good report on the international situation at the meeting yesterday.

5. Only his resourcefulness saved us from the danger which we faced.

6. His broad smile made me recognize him immediately.

7. I met him on my way home.

Ex.4. Make the syntactical analysis of the following sentences.

1. Although she knew he took these attentions so lightly, she could not help feeling angry and jealous. (Maugham)

2. And she felt that he could more profitably spend his evenings, when Julia was acting, by going to outlying theatres and trying to find talent. (Maugham)

3. Sitting now in the chapel, hearing the distant drone of Evvy’s voice, Mor was rehearsing what he had said to Rain and wondering if it was strictly true. (Murdoch)

4. There was no moon, and the tower emerged blackly against a black sky. (Murdoch).
