Approximately midway between South America and Tahiti, in the southeastern part of the Pacific Ocean, is Rapa Nui, or Easter Island - one of the smallest and most remote inhabited island in the world, one of the most mysterious places on the planet, the home of the strange statues the origin of which no one has yet been able to explain.

Scientists believe the first people on Easter Island there were about a thousand years ago. No one can say where they sailed, in the legends of the locals survived only stories about the god-hero of Hoth Motu, which appeared here together with other people, having sailed in boats. Gradually, the island's population increased, reaching a peak in the period of 14-15 centuries 10,000 people.

A little earlier, in the years 1000-1100 there appeared statues, moai, huge, up to 10 meters, stone idols, the purpose of which is unknown. According to one version, such statues were produced in every major race-family to show their superiority over the rest. Cut down the statue in the stone quarries in the craters of extinct volcanoes, bringing out to the shore of the island. For some unknown reasons, the mysterious work of cutting down the statues suddenly stopped - the island has a lot of unfinished idols, whose treatment was discontinued, most likely, all of a sudden. Subsequently, during tribal wars almost all statues were knocked down and buried, and some destroyed.

The history of the people of the island is also very tragic - with the arrival of the Europeans came and unknown disease that caused the death of many of the islanders, and in the 19th century, the overall picture of decline complement the Peruvian government, hundreds took the locals into slavery. Only in the mid 50's of the 20th century, the island has experienced a rebirth - the interest in it has awakened the famous explorer Thor Heyerdahl, re-opened it to the world. Today, thousands of tourists from all over the world come to Easter Island, where they are met by the revived to life famous stone giants today as a thousand years ago, did not take his eyes from his beloved island.
