NEW TECHNOLOGY TO MINIMIZE AVIATION’S IMPACT

ON THE ENVIRONMENT

Today’s commercial airlines are more fuel-efficient and cleaner, employing more advanced technology combustion systems that reduce the gaseous emissions associated with local air quality and climate change. Over the past 40 years, the commercial aviation industry has reduced fuel consumption per passenger-kilometre by 70 percent, while also limiting noise and reducing gaseous emissions. Much of this improvement is the byproduct of technologies that allow modern engines to operate at very high temperature and pressure for peak efficiency.

The high temperatures that provide such a wide range of environmental benefits, however, also increase the production of oxides of nitrogen (NOX) and particulate matter such as smoke. Advances made in combustor technology have been able to reduce smoke to invisible levels and have maintained these low levels despite the challenge of higher temperature operation.

There is increasing concern over the potential impact of a growing aviation industry on local air quality and climate change. This has led aircraft engine and airframe manufacturers to develop the new technologies needed to further mitigate the potential impacts of aviation on the environment. The manufactures have conducted programmes to develop technologies for reducing gaseous emissions, specifically carbon monoxide (CO2), unburned hydrocarbons (UHC) and NOX. These efforts have also served to improve engine operating efficiencies, aircraft aerodynamics and performance, reducing fuel burn and the production of the global warming gas, carbon dioxide (CO2).
