It was love at first sight for 29-year-old Maryl Priestley and 24-year-old Steve Parker when they met at the “Sports Person of the Year” TV Awards last year. She’s a popular newsreader and he’s an international football star. They’re an unusual couple. Maryl was born in Dublin, Ireland and has got a first class degree in politics from Oxford University. Steve plays football for England, and he left school at sixteen. Steve lives in a penthouse flat in Manchester, and Maryl lives in an 18th century house in London. They’re both very busy, and they only meet two days a week. “It’s difficult”, says Maryl, “because I work in the evenings in London, and Steve trains in the mornings in Manchester. I fly to Manchester, or Steve drives to London in his Ferrari on Saturday night, and then we both go back to work on Tuesday morning.”
Steve’s hobby is cooking. “My father’s a chef”, he says, “And my mother’s a great cook too”. Maryl likes reading biographies of famous people, and she is a keen chess player, but she doesn’t like cooking. She watches every news programme on TV, but Steve only watches sports programmes. They eat at home on Sundays and Mondays. “I’m in restaurants and hotels every day of the week”, she says, “I go to a lot of charity dinners. Steve cooks a romantic dinner with wine and candles on Sundays, but I’m happy with a sandwich and a nice hot cup of tea in front of the telly.”
