Tourism

Task: Read and translate the text. Answer the questions given after the text.

Tourism is defined as the act of travel with the intentions of recreational pleasure. The World Tourism Organization gives a definition to the word ‘tourist’ – it is someone who travels at least 50 miles away from their home, for the purpose of entertainment and pleasure. In other words, a tourist is a person who goes to another place for private interest or who is sent there (for example by a company), but is not employed at that place. Business tourists may go to another place for a conference, workshop or further education. Private tourists may go there for adventure, recreation, education, pilgrimage or other purposes.

The United Nations classified three forms of tourism: Domestic tourism, which involves residents of the given country traveling only within this country; Inbound tourism, involving non-residents traveling in the given country; and Outbound tourism, involving residents traveling in another country.

There are different types of tourism that can be enjoyed. Extreme tourism or shock tourism is a type of tourism that involves travelling to dangerous places (mountains, jungles, deserts, caves, etc.) or participation in dangerous events. Cultural tourism involves visiting historical or interesting places, such as Paris, Rome, Machu Picchu, etc. Cultural tourism is not new; since ancient times it has been a motivation for travel and today it is also a worldwide mass trend that encourages people to travel and experience other cultures. Cultural tourists enjoy visiting art museums, theaters and other sightseeings. Ecotourism can be assumed as a form of tourism when people avoid negative impacts that can damage or destroy the natural or cultural environments. It is a responsible travel that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people.Educational tourism is one of the fastest growing areas of the travel and tourism. Educational tourism is often called as career enhancement, job development or self-actualization experiences. The idea of educational tourism holds that travel is as much about self-improvement as it is about relaxation, that learning can be fun, and that learning is for people of all ages. There are such forms of educational tourism as school trips, study abroad experience, seminar or conference vacations, educational cruises, etc.
