Present Simple

FORM:

a) Positive statements

I/you/we/they eat chocolate. He/she/it eats chocolate.

b) Negative statements:

I/you/we/they don't eat chocolate. He/she/it doesn't eat chocolate.

c) Questions

Do I/you/we/they eat chocolate? Does he/she/it eat chocolate?

USE: we use the Present Simple:

a) with routine or regular repeated actions (often with adverbs of frequency like always, often, sometimes, never, every Saturday morning, once a week)

.She doesn't drink coffee after midday.

b) when we are talking about permanent situations

I come from Melbourne.

Present Continuous

FORM: the present form of be + the -ing form of the verb.

USE: we use the Present Continuous when we are talking about:

1 actions happening now

/ think she's having lunch.

2. changing/developing situations: My toothache is getting worse.

3. temporary situations

I am working in my father's firm this month.

Present Perfect Simple

FORM: have/has + past participle

USE: we use the Present Perfect Simple:

1 when we are describing situations that have continued from some time in the past until now

Mike has lived in Japan for three years. I've been in love with Bill since 1984.

2 when we are describing recent events

I've eaten two packets of crisps, a bar of chocolate a plate of spaghetti and four bananas so far today.

3 to talk about experience, that is things that have happened at some time in our lives

Have you ever been rock climbing?

4 when we can see a present result of past actions

Someone's let the dog into the living room and there are paw prints all over the sofa!

Present Perfect Continuous

FORM: have/has + been + -ing

USE: we use the Present Perfect Continuous:

1to talk about a recent activity when you can still see the effects of that activity

a: What's that green stuff on your hands?

в: Paint. I've been painting the bathroom.

2. to emphasise how long an action has been going on for I've been painting the bathroom all morning.

Past Simple

FORM: verb + -ed (remember there are many irregular verb forms)

USE: we use the Past Simple:

to talk about events in the past that are now finished;

I went to a really fantastic concert last night.

 

Past Continuous

FORM: was/were + -ing

USE: We use the Past Continuous:

to talk about actions in progress in the past

I was having a shower when the doorbell rang.

Past Perfect

FORM:had + past participle

USE:we use the Past Perfect:

1 to refer to a time earlier than another past time

By the time I saw her again, she had already marriedTom.

2 in reported speech

She said she had toldhim.
